Am I Actually Hungry?
Answer five questions about the trigger, craving, and stress level — Podge will tell you whether this is physical hunger, emotional hunger, or just thirst.
What this means
This tool scores physical hunger signals against emotional hunger signals to give a verdict on whether the urge to eat is genuinely physical or something else.
Formula used
Parallel scoring: physical hunger signals (time elapsed, stomach trigger, no specific craving, water won't help) vs emotional hunger signals (stress, emotional/boredom trigger, specific craving, water might help).
Worked example
5 hours since last meal, stomach rumbling, no specific craving, water won't do it, stress level 3 — physical score wins clearly. Probably Hungry. 1 hour since last meal, stress level 8, chocolate craving, bored trigger, water might help — emotional score wins. Emotional Hunger.
Common questions
What is emotional hunger?
Emotional hunger is an urge to eat driven by feelings rather than physical need — stress, boredom, sadness, anxiety, or even happiness. It tends to be more sudden than physical hunger, often focuses on specific comfort foods, and is not typically satisfied in the same way physical hunger is. The feeling of guilt or fullness discomfort after eating is more common with emotional hunger.
Why does the 15-minute test work?
Physical hunger builds gradually and persists. Emotional hunger tends to be triggered by a state or stimulus and diminishes when that stimulus changes. A 15-minute pause — with water, a short walk, or a different activity — often reveals whether the urge was physical (it persists) or emotional (it fades or shifts).
