Energy tariff checker

UK energy market — uses the price cap system.

What this means

This tool gives a tariff verdict based on your current deal type, remaining contract length, usage, and attitude to price risk.

Formula used

Decision tree based on tariff type, remaining contract length, usage band, and attitude to price risk. Energy market is too uncertain for a pure numeric model.

Worked example

Variable tariff, £130/month, medium usage, concerned about rising bills — Consider Fixing. Fixed tariff with 9 months remaining, any usage — Stay Put (exit fees outweigh switching benefit). Fixed deal ending in 2 months — Start Comparing now.

Common questions

What is the price cap?
Ofgem's energy price cap limits the unit rate and standing charge that suppliers can charge on default variable tariffs. It is reviewed quarterly. It does not cap your total bill — a household using more energy will pay more, but cannot be charged above the capped unit rate. Fixed tariffs sit outside the cap and can be above or below it.

Are there exit fees on fixed tariffs?
Most fixed energy tariffs have exit fees if you leave before the end date — typically £25–£50 per fuel. These fees are usually waived within 49 days of the contract end date, which is why the tool flags that window as the right time to start comparing.

Plain-English summary

Enter your tariff type, bill, and risk appetite to get a fix, stay, or compare verdict for your energy deal.

This section translates the result into a short, direct takeaway rather than leaving the page at a bare number.

Disclaimer: This tool gives directional guidance only — not energy advice. The UK energy market is volatile and future prices cannot be predicted. Always use a comparison site (Uswitch, MoneySavingExpert's Cheap Energy Club) for actual deal comparisons before switching.
