Hangover Severity Predictor
Enter units, sleep, food, and water to get a severity verdict — Mild, Moderate, Heavy, or Nuclear — and know what you're in for.
What this means
This tool estimates hangover severity by weighing units consumed against the protective factors: food, water, sleep, and time elapsed since drinking.
Formula used
Weighted score across six factors: units consumed, food before drinking, water intake, age band, sleep hours, and time since last drink.
Worked example
12 units, no meal before, 1 glass of water, aged 38, 4 hours sleep, last drink 2 hours ago — score 12. Nuclear. 5 units, proper meal, 4 glasses water, aged 28, 7 hours sleep, last drink 9 hours ago — score 1. Mild.
Common questions
What counts as a unit of alcohol?
One UK unit is 10ml of pure alcohol. A pint of 4% beer is about 2.3 units. A 175ml glass of 13% wine is about 2.3 units. A 25ml measure of 40% spirits is 1 unit. Most standard restaurant portions and pints are 2–3 units.
Why does age affect the score?
Liver enzyme activity that processes alcohol decreases with age, and recovery times lengthen. The same number of units will typically produce a worse hangover in someone in their 40s than the same person in their 20s. Individual tolerance also varies significantly.
