Sleep check

Enter your ideal sleep hours, actual hours last night, how many nights running, your alertness, and today's caffeine to get a debt and recovery estimate.

What this means

This calculator compares your ideal sleep with what you are actually getting, accumulates the deficit across the streak, and estimates how long full recovery takes.

Formula used

Sleep debt = (ideal hours − actual hours) × nights. Recovery estimate ≈ debt hours ÷ 1.5 nights.

Worked example

Ideal 8 hours, actual 5.5 hours, 5 nights running — debt is 12.5 hours. Recovery takes roughly 8 nights of full sleep.

Common questions

Can you recover sleep debt in one long lie-in?
Partially. A single long sleep can recover some acute debt, but research suggests recovery from extended deprivation takes multiple nights rather than one session.

Why does caffeine appear in the calculator?
Caffeine masks the feeling of tiredness without addressing the underlying deficit. People often underestimate how tired they are when caffeinated — the calculator flags this as a potential alertness mask.

Plain-English summary

Enter your sleep data to find out how much debt is accumulating and how long recovery will take.

This section translates the result into a short, direct takeaway rather than leaving the page at a bare number.
