How to decide whether to send a difficult message
A practical way to check tone, motive, timing, and screenshot risk before a message escapes the chat box.
The problem is rarely just the words
A risky message usually has more than one issue: emotional heat, unclear motive, bad timing, and a recipient who may read it differently than intended. The words matter, but the surrounding situation matters too.
Check what the message is trying to do
Clarifying, apologising, and setting a boundary are different from winning, punishing, or pretending to be fine. If the real motive is to make someone feel something, the message probably needs a slower pass.
Use the screenshot test
If you would hate to see the message outside its original context, that is not automatic proof the message must stay unsent forever. It is a prompt to edit for clarity, proportion, and future-you.
