Worked example
An estate of £700,000 including a main residence passing to children: nil-rate band £325,000 + residence nil-rate band £175,000 = £500,000 threshold. Taxable at 40% on £200,000 = £80,000 IHT bill.
Common questions
What is the inheritance tax nil-rate band?
The nil-rate band is the threshold below which no inheritance tax is charged. It is currently £325,000. A married couple or civil partners can combine their allowances for up to £650,000.
What is the residence nil-rate band?
An additional £175,000 allowance for estates that include a main residence being passed to direct descendants. It phases out for estates above £2 million.
