EV vs Petrol True Cost
What does EV versus petrol actually cost over your ownership period? Includes purchase price, charging, insurance, servicing, and residual value.
What this means
No waffle. Just the number and how it was worked out.
Formula used
Total cost = purchase price + fuel + servicing + insurance + home charger (EV only) minus residual value, over the ownership period.
Worked example
EV at £35,000, petrol at £22,000, 10,000 miles/year over 5 years: the fuel and servicing savings begin to close the gap by year 3–4 depending on energy prices.
Common questions
At what mileage does an EV become cheaper than petrol?
Generally at higher annual mileages (12,000+ miles/year) and over longer ownership periods (5+ years). At low mileage or short ownership, the higher EV purchase price is rarely offset by fuel savings.
Does the tool include charging infrastructure costs?
Yes. Home charger installation is included as a one-off cost. The tool uses your electricity unit rate for charging costs and assumes most charging is done at home.
