How to split a restaurant bill fairly without the awkward maths

A quick guide to equal splits, tip calculation, and handling the moment when not everyone ordered the same thing.

Equal splits are the least painful option

When a group regularly eats and drinks together, an equal split is usually the right default. The minor differences between orders tend to even out over time, and the social cost of itemising everything is higher than the money saved.

Tip before you split, not after

Work out the tip on the full bill before dividing between people, not after. This avoids the mistake of everyone tipping individually on their own share, which usually leaves the server with less than intended.

Watch for service already on the bill

Many UK restaurants add a 10–12.5% discretionary or mandatory service charge. If a service charge is already included, check before adding a tip on top. If you want to tip additionally on top of the charge, confirm whether it goes directly to the staff.
